Sioux Falls, SD — Strong winds and elevated fire risks are gripping the region today as temperatures start to shift dramatically. A midweek weather roller-coaster is unfolding, with gusty winds creating dangerous fire conditions and a steep drop in temperatures expected by Wednesday. Residents in Sioux Falls and surrounding areas, especially along I-29, should remain vigilant as the fire danger persists through Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, today’s high will reach 73°F, but the drop begins tonight, with Wednesday’s highs dipping to 61°F—10 to 15 degrees cooler than Tuesday. Winds from the northwest will persist, maintaining elevated fire risks, particularly in rural and dry areas. The cold front arriving Thursday could bring light showers to the eastern parts of the region, providing slight relief from the dry conditions.

The five-day outlook shows a rebound in temperatures on Thursday, briefly warming back to 68°F before another cool front brings highs in the upper 50s by Friday. Dry weather will dominate most areas, with Friday expected to be sunny but cooler, reaching a high of 58°F. Fire risk will linger until winds subside on Friday, especially in forested areas and along highways.
