Sioux Falls, SD – Fire danger remains a critical concern across South Dakota today as warm temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity create extreme fire conditions. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for areas west of the James River, including Gregory, Aurora, Charles Mix, and Douglas counties, from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, temperatures will climb into the mid-50s to low 70s, with the warmest conditions west of Interstate 29. Winds will shift from the south to the northwest as a cold front moves in, producing gusts of up to 40 mph. Low relative humidity, dropping to 20-25%, further exacerbates fire risk.
Officials warn that any fires that ignite could spread rapidly and display erratic behavior. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor activities that could spark fires, such as using equipment that produces sparks, tossing cigarette butts on the ground, or conducting outdoor burning.
Looking ahead, another strong system will move in Thursday night, bringing more gusty winds and continued dry conditions on Friday. Though humidity levels will improve slightly, the fire danger will remain very high.
The public is advised to stay updated on fire conditions and report any new fires immediately to local authorities.
