Sioux Falls, S.D. – Severe thunderstorms could develop across much of eastern South Dakota tonight, with the greatest threat between 8 p.m. and midnight along and north of Interstate 90. Forecasters warn of hail up to 2 inches in diameter and damaging winds near 70 mph, particularly in communities from Mitchell to Watertown.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk remains in place for these areas. While the tornado risk is low, strong, fast-moving storms may cause property damage and create dangerous travel conditions late this evening.

Cities including Huron, Brookings, and Madison could see intense lightning, short bursts of heavy rain, and wind strong enough to down tree limbs and power lines. Drivers are urged to avoid being on the road during peak storm activity, and residents should secure outdoor items that could become projectiles in high winds.

The severe weather risk will diminish after midnight, but additional updates and advisories may be issued if storms intensify.
