South Dakota – A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for portions of central and north central South Dakota, with accumulating snow expected to create slippery travel conditions overnight into Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Aberdeen, 2 to 4 inches of snow are forecast across the advisory area. The advisory is in effect from 9 p.m. CST Friday (8 p.m. MST) through 9 a.m. CST Saturday (8 a.m. MST).

The advisory includes Corson, Dewey, Stanley, Sully, Hughes, Hyde, Hand, Jones, Lyman, and Buffalo counties. Cities impacted include Pierre, Fort Pierre, Highmore, Miller, Murdo, Isabel, Onida, Kennebec, Fort Thompson, and McIntosh.

Forecasters say snow will develop this evening and continue overnight, allowing accumulations to build on roads, bridges, and untreated surfaces. While snowfall totals are moderate, cold temperatures may cause snow to stick quickly, increasing the risk of slick travel conditions.

Drivers traveling overnight or early Saturday morning should be prepared for reduced traction and slower travel speeds, particularly on rural highways and secondary roads. The advisory timing may affect early-morning commuters, agricultural transport, and weekend travelers.

Officials recommend slowing down, allowing extra travel time, and using caution when braking or turning. Motorists can check the latest South Dakota road conditions by dialing 511 for real-time updates.

Snow is expected to taper off Saturday morning, though lingering slick spots may persist into the late morning hours before conditions gradually improve.
