South Chicago Heights, IL – Firefighters from multiple suburbs battled a large warehouse blaze Monday afternoon after smoke was reported at 3341 Butler Avenue, according to the South Chicago Heights Fire Department.

At approximately 12:58 p.m. on October 6, crews were initially dispatched for an automatic alarm, but the call was upgraded to a full Structure Fire after reports of heavy smoke, officials said. Engine 67 arrived within three minutes and found a large warehouse with smoke showing from the roof. Firefighters quickly initiated an aggressive attack, using aerial apparatus to access the roof and suppress flames.

According to Fire Chief Chad Vlietstra, fire control was achieved within about 90 minutes, though crews remained on scene for several hours conducting salvage and overhaul operations. In total, more than 46 firefighters, 7 engine companies, 3 truck companies, and 4 ambulances responded.

One firefighter was evaluated and released at the scene with no injuries. All building occupants had safely evacuated before crews arrived.

Responding agencies included departments from Steger, Park Forest, Sauk Village, Crete, Matteson, and several others. Station coverage for South Chicago Heights was provided by the Monee and Mokena Fire Protection Districts during the incident.

Officials noted the fire’s timing during Fire Prevention Month, reminding residents to test smoke detectors and fire alarm systems regularly. Early detection, they said, was key to the safe evacuation and swift response.
