South Chicago Heights, IL – Fire crews from multiple departments responded to a structure fire Friday morning at a building on 3341 Butler Avenue, marking the second fire at the same location this week, according to the South Chicago Heights Fire Department.
The department said the call came in around 10:09 a.m. on October 10, initially reported as an automatic alarm. When firefighters arrived, building staff confirmed smoke inside the structure. Crews quickly found a roof fire caused by ongoing construction work. The alarm was upgraded to a structure fire response as firefighters launched interior and roof operations to extinguish the blaze.
Officials reported no injuries during the incident. The fire was fully under control about 90 minutes after the first alarm, following an escalation to a Full Still alarm to provide additional coverage.
In total, 26 firefighters, six engine companies, two truck companies, two ambulances, and four command officers were involved. Mutual aid came from departments in Steger, Park Forest, Sauk Village, Crete, University Park, and Chicago Heights, among others.
Fire Chief Chad Vlietstra said the quick response and safety protocols helped prevent serious damage and injuries. He reminded residents that October is Fire Prevention Month, encouraging homeowners and businesses to test smoke alarms and fire systems regularly.
