Phoenix, AZ – The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. The storms are anticipated to form primarily across the higher terrain of south central and southeastern Arizona, with some extending into the lower deserts.
According to the US National Weather Service in Phoenix, the storms will develop over the Mogollon Rim this afternoon and move into the lower deserts of south central and southeastern Arizona between 4-10 p.m. MST. Residents should prepare for potentially damaging wind gusts of 58 mph or greater. The main risks include strong outflow winds and localized flash flooding.
For southeastern Maricopa, western Pinal, and southern Gila counties, there is a 50-70% chance of wind gusts reaching 35 mph or more and a 5-10% chance of gusts exceeding 58 mph. Small hail and lightning are also possible, posing additional hazards.
The National Weather Service advises residents to secure outdoor items and stay indoors during the storms. Flash flooding can occur rapidly, so avoiding low-lying areas and swift water crossings is crucial.
In addition to the storm risk, temperatures in Phoenix are forecasted to remain high, with today’s high reaching 109°F. The following days will see temperatures slightly lower, but still above 105°F, with sunny conditions expected through the weekend.
