Sioux Falls, SD – The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has issued a High Wind Warning for parts of south-central South Dakota, including Brule, Gregory, and Charles Mix Counties, in effect from noon Tuesday through 3 a.m. Wednesday.
Forecasters warn that west winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, are expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and persist overnight. The strongest gusts are forecast in Gregory and Charles Mix Counties, while nearby Brule County, including Chamberlain and Kimball, could see gusts near 55 mph.
The NWS cautions that damaging winds may knock down trees and power lines, leading to widespread power outages. Travel will be difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles on open highways such as I-90 and U.S. 281.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel, and exercise caution during the warning period. Winds are expected to gradually diminish early Wednesday morning.
