Carlisle, Pennsylvania – Snow will begin around 5 a.m. Sunday, and bursts topping 1 inch per hour could quickly cover roads across Cumberland and Perry counties before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 5 a.m. Sunday until 1 p.m. Monday. Total snowfall between 5 and 9 inches is possible, with the potential for higher totals where heavier snow bands set up. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph late Sunday night and Monday, increasing the risk of downed tree limbs and isolated power outages.
Statewide impacts will stretch across central Pennsylvania, but the heaviest travel concerns focus on south-central corridors. In Carlisle and Newport, snow-covered roads may develop quickly Sunday morning. Interstate 81, Route 11 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike could become slick and snow-packed as snowfall intensifies Sunday afternoon and overnight.
Travel could become very difficult, especially during the Monday morning commute. Officials urge residents to delay non-essential travel, dress in layers if heading outdoors and monitor PennDOT’s 511 system for real-time road conditions. The warning remains in effect through early Monday afternoon, and snowfall totals may increase if localized heavy bands persist.
