Hastings, Nebraska – Strong winds and extremely dry air will create dangerous fire conditions by midday Tuesday, with any spark capable of spreading rapidly across parts of Kansas and into southern Nebraska.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday for north-central Kansas, with critical conditions expected to expand northward. Southwest winds are forecast to reach 15 to 25 mph, with gusts exceeding 30 mph during peak afternoon hours.

Humidity levels could drop as low as 10 to 15 percent, especially in areas near the Nebraska-Kansas border, including Phillipsburg, Smith Center, and Beloit. This combination of wind and dry air significantly increases the risk for fast-moving grass fires.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could create sparks, including equipment use or dragging chains. Fire crews warn that fires could spread quickly and become difficult to control under these conditions.

The highest fire danger will peak during the afternoon and early evening before easing after sunset, but additional alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
