Hastings, Nebraska – South-central Nebraska is baking under extreme heat Sunday, with heat index values climbing to 110 degrees and actual highs ranging from 95 to 103°F. Residents should limit outdoor activity and stay hydrated as the heat lingers through at least Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, dangerous heat continues Monday with highs between 97 and 105°F. Heat index values could reach a blistering 115°F by late afternoon. Winds from the south at 10–15 mph may offer slight relief, but conditions remain hazardous for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations. An isolated thunderstorm (15–25% chance) could develop in northwestern areas late Monday.

Tuesday will bring a modest cooldown, with highs in the low 90s to near 101°F. However, the heat index may still exceed 100°F. Widespread thunderstorm chances increase Tuesday evening into the night, with rain probabilities rising to 70% across the region.

Communities including Kearney, Grand Island, and McCook should monitor updates, check on elderly neighbors, and avoid peak sun exposure. Cooling centers may be available locally.

Heat alerts remain in effect through Monday, and more watches or warnings are possible if storm activity intensifies Tuesday night.
