Billings, Montana — A widespread High Wind Warning is in effect across large portions of south-central and southeastern Montana, with damaging northwest winds expected from late Thursday morning through Friday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, wind gusts of 60 to 65 miles per hour are forecast across multiple counties, including Judith Gap, Southern Wheatland, Musselshell, Rosebud, Custer, Fallon, Powder River, Carter, and Southern Big Horn counties. Portions of northern Wyoming, including the Sheridan Foothills, are also included.

The warning begins as early as 11 a.m. MST Thursday in Judith Gap and Southern Wheatland and expands to surrounding counties from noon onward, remaining in effect until Friday afternoon or early evening, depending on location.

Forecasters said the strong winds could blow down trees and power lines, damage roofs and outbuildings, and cause scattered power outages. Travel is expected to be difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles along major routes including Interstate 90, Interstate 94, Highway 12, Highway 87, Highway 191, and Highway 212.

In eastern Montana, snow showers combined with strong winds may lead to temporary visibility reductions, especially overnight into Friday morning.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor objects, avoid unnecessary travel during peak wind periods, and use caution if driving. Truck drivers and those towing trailers should be prepared for dangerous crosswinds.

The National Weather Service advises monitoring updated forecasts and statements as wind timing and intensity may vary by location.
