Wichita, Kansas – Periods of widespread rain and embedded thunderstorms are expected to move into south-central Kansas late Wednesday night, with a few storms capable of producing hail and heavy downpours through Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, showers and thunderstorms will develop overnight and continue into Thursday morning and afternoon. While most activity will remain below severe limits, a few storms could strengthen, producing hail up to quarter size. The stronger storm potential is greatest along and southeast of the Kansas Turnpike.
Rainfall amounts are expected to be significant in spots, with the highest likelihood of at least a half inch of rain focused near and east of Interstate 135. Cities including Wichita, Winfield, Emporia, Eureka, Chanute, and Coffeyville have a high probability of measurable rainfall, while totals decrease farther west toward Pratt and Russell.
Travel impacts are possible overnight and during the Thursday morning commute, especially where heavier rain reduces visibility or water pools on roadways. Drivers along I-35, I-135, and U.S. 54 should be prepared for changing conditions.
Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items, monitor weather alerts overnight, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Additional updates may be issued if stronger storms become more likely as the system moves through Thursday.
