Dodge City, KS – A narrow window for isolated severe storms could impact parts of south central Kansas later this afternoon, with large hail posing the primary threat between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, storm development is expected to remain limited, with less than a 15 percent chance of formation near and east of a Pratt to Medicine Lodge line. However, any storm that does develop could quickly become strong to severe.

Communities including Pratt, Medicine Lodge, and areas toward Hutchinson and Wichita sit in the zone where storms are most likely to form. While coverage will be sparse, hail large enough to damage vehicles and crops is the main concern, with storms moving east and weakening by early evening.

Drivers along U.S. Highway 281 and nearby routes should remain alert for sudden changes in weather, including brief downpours and gusty winds near any developing storm.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware this afternoon and have alerts enabled, as conditions could change quickly despite the low overall storm coverage.

The threat window will close after sunset, with quieter conditions expected overnight unless new development occurs.
