Hays, Kan. – Residents across central and southern Kansas could see dangerous heat index readings climbing to 105 degrees Friday afternoon, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory for nine counties from 1 to 8 p.m. CDT.
According to the NWS in Dodge City, the advisory includes Ellis, Rush, Pawnee, Stafford, Edwards, Kiowa, Pratt, Comanche, and Barber counties, covering cities such as Hays, Pratt, Medicine Lodge, and Larned. High humidity combined with soaring air temperatures will elevate the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for those working outdoors or without adequate cooling.
Officials urge residents to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening, stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, and drink plenty of fluids. Vulnerable groups, including the elderly, children, and outdoor workers, should be closely monitored. Pets should also be kept in shaded, cool areas with access to water.
The heat will ease after sunset, but forecasters warn another round of hot and humid weather could return this weekend.
