Wichita, Kansas – Residents across southern Kansas should brace for potential flooding tonight as heavy rain returns to the region, threatening roads, creeks, and low-lying neighborhoods.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a Flood Watch is in effect from 9 p.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Friday for Harper, Sumner, Cowley, Chautauqua, and Montgomery counties. Cities including Wellington, Arkansas City, Winfield, Coffeyville, and Independence are at risk of flash flooding due to saturated ground and more thunderstorms expected overnight.
Streams and creeks in these areas are already running high. With another round of storms forecast, poor drainage zones and low-water crossings could quickly become hazardous. Flooding is most likely after dark, increasing the danger for drivers and emergency responders.
If you live in a flood-prone area, move vehicles to higher ground and avoid traveling after sunset unless necessary. Do not attempt to drive through water-covered roads.
Conditions will be monitored closely, and Flood Warnings may be issued with little notice. Emergency managers urge residents to stay weather-aware and prepare now.
