Columbia, South Carolina – South Carolina could see up to 2 inches of rain by early Monday as a slow-moving system brings widespread showers and thunderstorms across the state, particularly from late Sunday into Monday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, periods of heavy rain are expected to begin Saturday night and intensify into Sunday evening. Isolated thunderstorms could produce locally higher amounts, especially in the Midlands and eastern portions of the state, where some areas may exceed 2.5 inches by Monday. A flood watch has not been issued yet, but forecasters warn that localized flooding is possible in poor drainage areas.
Columbia and surrounding counties, including Lexington, Richland, and Sumter, are likely to receive between 1.5 to 2 inches of rain, while areas further southeast toward Orangeburg and Clarendon counties could see the highest totals. Temperatures will remain mild, with highs in the low to mid-70s and lows dipping into the low 60s overnight.
Drivers should use caution on roadways late Sunday, especially during the Monday morning commute, when ponding on roads could lead to delays. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, monitor local alerts, and keep phones charged in case of power outages.
More rain is expected into Monday, and additional advisories may be issued.
