Charleston, S.C. – Drivers across South Carolina’s Lowcountry face hazardous overnight conditions as heavy rain and thunderstorms continue into Sunday morning. Flooding is the greatest threat, with standing water expected on major roads including U.S. 17.

According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch remains in effect until 2 a.m. Sunday, while a Coastal Flood Advisory runs through 10 a.m. August 24. Storms could dump up to 2 inches of rain overnight, with locally higher amounts possible in stronger cells. Winds may gust up to 20 mph, creating additional hazards near waterways.

Charleston neighborhoods prone to flooding, including the downtown peninsula, West Ashley, and James Island, are likely to see ponding on streets. Emergency officials advise avoiding unnecessary travel overnight and keeping cell phones charged in case of power outages.

Saturday night storms will ease by early Sunday, but scattered showers and additional thunderstorms are expected by afternoon. Rain chances remain at 60 percent through the day, and drivers should continue to watch for water-covered roads.

By Monday, skies begin to clear with mostly sunny conditions and highs near 88 degrees. Cooler mornings and drier weather will dominate early next week before another round of scattered storms arrives midweek.

Warnings remain in place through Sunday morning, with the potential for additional advisories if rainfall persists.
