Columbia, SC – Residents across South Carolina should brace for the coldest stretch of the season starting tonight. With a cold front moving through the area, temperatures will plunge into the 40s by day and low 20s overnight. Wind chills could dip into the teens Sunday and Monday morning, creating hazardous conditions for those without proper winter gear.
According to the National Weather Service, today’s high in Columbia will reach 52 degrees before temperatures drop to a low of 26 tonight. By Sunday, high temperatures will hover around 46, but the wind chill will make it feel significantly colder. Monday morning will bring even colder conditions, with lows expected near 23 degrees and wind chills in the low teens.
Residents are urged to check on vulnerable neighbors and pets and to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during the coldest hours. Motorists on major roadways, such as I-26 and I-77, should take caution as frost may form on bridges and overpasses overnight.
Looking ahead, Christmas Day in Columbia is forecasted to be warmer, with highs near 57 degrees and a slight chance of afternoon showers. By midweek, temperatures will begin climbing toward the 60s, offering some relief from the bitter cold.
