Charleston, South Carolina – A surge of very cold air could bring wintry weather to parts of southeast South Carolina and southeast Georgia this weekend, raising concerns for freezing rain and hazardous travel in areas not accustomed to winter conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, confidence is increasing that at least minor winter weather impacts will occur late this weekend as colder air moves into the region. While exact timing and precipitation type remain uncertain, forecasters say freezing or frozen precipitation is becoming a growing concern, particularly inland from the coast.

The highest likelihood for minor impacts currently stretches across portions of southeast Georgia and inland southeast South Carolina, including areas near Walterboro, Allendale, Hampton, and portions of the Savannah River corridor. Even light ice accumulation could lead to slick roads, especially on bridges and elevated surfaces, and may affect travel late Saturday into Sunday.

Along the immediate coast, including Charleston, Beaufort, and Savannah, temperatures are expected to hover closer to freezing, keeping impacts more limited for now. However, small shifts in temperature could significantly change conditions.

Residents are encouraged to prepare now by reviewing cold-weather plans, limiting unnecessary travel during the coldest periods, and protecting pipes, pets, and plants. Officials stress that details will become clearer as the weekend approaches, and additional advisories may be issued. Monitoring updates closely through the end of the week is strongly advised.
