Columbia, SC – The Atlantic hurricane season has produced nine named storms through September 30, with four becoming hurricanes and three reaching major Category 3–5 strength, according to the National Weather Service office in Columbia.

The most recent activity includes Hurricanes Gabrielle, Humberto, and Imelda. Humberto and Imelda remain active but are currently tracking away from the United States, easing immediate concerns along the East Coast.

According to NOAA, the 2025 season so far resembles the 2022 season, when the Atlantic produced nine named storms and four hurricanes by the end of September. Historically, October can remain active, meaning totals for 2025 are still to be determined.

Comparisons with recent years highlight the variability of hurricane seasons. By this time in 2020, the Atlantic had already recorded 23 named storms, while 2023 had 18. The slower start to 2025 does not rule out the potential for late-season systems, forecasters note.

Meteorologists remind coastal residents that the official hurricane season continues through November 30, and preparedness remains key even as storms trend eastward.
