Columbia, SC – Travelers and residents across South Carolina should prepare for a damp and cooler weekend as a cold front settles over the region. Patchy rain and fog are forecast to linger into Saturday, potentially affecting travel along major routes like I-20 and I-26.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Columbia, cooler-than-average temperatures will dominate Friday and Saturday. Highs today will reach the upper 40s, while rain and drizzle persist throughout the day. By Saturday, patchy morning fog will transition to light showers, with temperatures climbing slightly into the mid-60s.

The NWS warns that visibility may be reduced during early morning hours, especially on rural and highway corridors. Rain chances are expected to increase Saturday evening, with steady showers likely after 7 p.m. Rainfall totals could range between a half and three-quarters of an inch before tapering off late Sunday.

Looking ahead, Sunday will bring a noticeable warm-up as temperatures climb to a high of 71°F. However, heavier rain and thunderstorms may develop, creating slick roadways and the possibility of localized flooding in low-lying areas. By Monday, sunny skies will return, with highs near 67°F, offering a reprieve as New Year’s Day approaches.

Travelers are advised to allow extra time, use headlights in low-visibility conditions, and check local traffic updates before heading out. Those planning outdoor activities should prepare for wet weather Saturday and Sunday, with clearer skies expected as the week begins.
