Greenville, S.C. – After 42 straight days of sweltering 90-degree heat, residents across the Greenville-Spartanburg area are finally catching a break. With afternoon highs struggling to rise out of the 70s, the longest heat streak on record for the Upstate officially ends today.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, this six-week stretch marked an unprecedented run of extreme summer heat, with daily highs consistently hitting or exceeding 90°F since mid-June. Today’s cooler air, ushered in by cloud cover and increased moisture, has broken that oppressive pattern.

While this cooldown brings a welcome change, energy providers are urging residents to continue conserving electricity as the grid recovers from sustained demand. Outdoor workers and vulnerable residents are also getting a much-needed reprieve, especially with heat index values no longer topping 100°F.

The National Weather Service says the cooler trend may last through early next week, with scattered showers keeping daytime highs in check. No additional excessive heat warnings are currently in effect, though forecasters are watching for a possible warm-up by midweek.
