COLUMBIA, S.C. – A Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect from 2AM Thursday through 11AM EDT Friday across central South Carolina and east-central Georgia, where northeast winds of 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph will create rough conditions on area lakes. The National Weather Service in Columbia said the extended wind event will pose hazards for small craft on Lake Murray, Thurmond Lake, and Lake Marion, as well as smaller regional waterways.

According to forecasters, winds will strengthen late Wednesday night as high pressure builds to the north and low pressure deepens offshore. The advisory area includes Columbia, Augusta, Aiken, Sumter, Orangeburg, and Lexington, along with portions of Burke and McDuffie Counties in Georgia. Waves on larger lakes could reach 2 to 3 feet, especially during the afternoon and evening hours Thursday.

Boaters are urged to use caution or postpone trips, as strong gusts and choppy water can easily capsize small vessels. Secure docks, loose equipment, and boats moored along exposed shorelines. The National Weather Service also advises that sustained winds may make fishing and paddlecraft activities unsafe through Friday morning.

Winds will gradually diminish Friday afternoon, followed by calmer and warmer conditions into the weekend.
