Columbia, SC – South Carolina residents should brace for strong winds and an elevated fire risk Friday before a warm and sunny weekend. The National Weather Service has issued a Lake Wind Advisory and a Fire Danger Statement, warning of gusty conditions and dry air that could fuel wildfires.
According to the National Weather Service, northwest winds of 10-20 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, will persist through 8 a.m. Friday across portions of central South Carolina and eastern Georgia. These winds could create hazardous conditions on area lakes, making boating dangerous due to choppy waves. Additionally, dry air and breezy conditions have led to a Fire Danger Statement from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, increasing the risk of wildfires, particularly in wooded and grassy areas.
Despite Friday’s gusty conditions, the weekend will bring clear skies and rising temperatures. Columbia will see a high of 65°F on Friday, warming up to 75°F on Saturday and reaching 78°F on Sunday. Overnight lows will range from the upper 30s to mid-50s.
Looking ahead, Monday could bring scattered showers, with a 60% chance of rain before 2 p.m. However, by Tuesday and Wednesday, sunny skies return with highs in the mid-to-upper 70s.
Residents should use caution Friday, particularly near open flames or while boating. Expect improving weather through the weekend, with a taste of spring warmth returning to the region.
