Greenville, SC – An unusually strong surge of cold air damming is keeping Upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina locked in a pattern of cool, cloudy weather—an unusual turn for early August.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, high temperatures will struggle to climb above the 70s for much of the area, with cloud cover and periods of rain likely for the western half of the forecast region. Rain chances reach as high as 80% near Asheville, with most of Upstate seeing at least a 60% shot at showers. Areas along I-85 and into the Midlands will stay drier, but still well below typical summer warmth.

Travelers should expect damp roads and occasional reduced visibility, especially west of Greenville and into the Blue Ridge. Outdoor plans may need adjusting, with ongoing rain and cool breezes persisting through the weekend.

Residents are urged to keep rain gear handy, check road conditions before heading out, and use caution on highways during heavier downpours. Temperatures will remain unseasonably cool for August until this weather pattern finally loosens its grip by early next week, but additional advisories could be posted if the clouds and rain linger longer than expected.
