Charleston, SC – Residents across coastal South Carolina are waking up to near-record cold this Tuesday morning, with the National Weather Service warning of wind chills dropping as low as 18 to 23 degrees Fahrenheit before sunrise.
According to the NWS Charleston, temperatures early Tuesday will range from the mid-20s inland to lower 30s along the coast, making for one of the coldest starts of the season. The agency is urging residents to dress in layers, bring pets indoors, and keep space heaters at least three feet from flammable materials.
The coldest period is expected between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m., when wind chills will make conditions feel far colder than the actual temperature. Commuters, bus stop students, and early workers are advised to bundle up against the biting cold.
By afternoon, temperatures are only expected to reach the upper 40s to low 50s, with another chilly night forecast into Wednesday, as lows again dip into the 30s.
The National Weather Service also shared “Bus Stop Safety” reminders, emphasizing warm coats, gloves, hats, and scarves for children heading out in the early morning hours.
Residents are reminded to check on vulnerable neighbors and ensure outdoor pets have proper shelter as the cold snap continues.
