SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Thick fog clings to the foothills this morning, softening headlights and slowing early traffic along I-85. But the mild, hazy start won’t last much longer—an Arctic blast will drop temperatures into the 20s by Monday night, likely ending the growing season across Upstate South Carolina and parts of western North Carolina.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, patchy fog should lift after sunrise, followed by partly sunny skies and a high near 74°F. A few spotty showers may form late tonight before drier air arrives Sunday. Winds will shift northwest Sunday afternoon, marking the leading edge of a sharp November cold snap expected to grip the region by early Monday.

Forecasters warn that widespread freezing temperatures are likely Monday night, with many areas from Greenville to Gaffney and Hickory dipping into the mid-20s. Even lower Piedmont towns could briefly touch 30°F. This kind of freeze may qualify as a “hard freeze” for many Upstate farms and gardens, ending what’s left of the fall growing season.

Residents are urged to protect outdoor pipes, cover sensitive plants, and bring pets indoors before Monday evening. Travelers should also prepare for brisk northwest winds Monday, with gusts up to 25 mph creating biting wind chills for Veterans Day parades and ceremonies Tuesday.

To be fair, sunshine will dominate most of the week—but this pattern marks the first true taste of winter for the Carolinas. After all, when Upstate air turns this crisp in early November, it usually means Thanksgiving cold is right around the corner.
