Greenville, SC – Severe weather will impact parts of South Carolina Thursday, with tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds all on the table.

The National Weather Service has issued a variety of severe storm outlooks for Thursday, May 8, 2025, including risks of tornadoes, hail, and high winds. The primary threats are expected between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., with conditions worsening as the day progresses. According to the NWS, regions from Asheville down through Greenville and Spartanburg should prepare for potentially severe thunderstorms by late afternoon.

In the Upstate, areas including Greenville, Anderson, and Toccoa are at heightened risk for large hail, with stones up to 2 inches in diameter possible. Residents are urged to stay indoors and avoid travel during storm activity. The tornado risk, while relatively lower, still carries the potential for brief tornadoes, especially near Greenville, Anderson, and Toccoa, which are under a 10% risk area.

Severe winds are another concern, with gusts that could exceed 60 mph, potentially causing power outages and tree damage. Travelers along Interstate 85, particularly near Spartanburg, should remain vigilant, as the worst conditions will likely hit during evening rush hours.

The storm’s timing is expected to peak after 5 p.m., with the greatest threat of severe weather occurring between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. After that, storm conditions should begin to decrease, though residents should remain cautious until midnight.

For up-to-the-minute alerts, keep a weather radio or local media on hand. Stay weather aware, and make sure to have emergency supplies ready in case of power loss or road closures.
