South Carolina — Windshields glaze over, tree limbs creak, and pavement turns slick before sunrise. Freezing rain has locked in across the Upstate, creating dangerous conditions that can worsen quickly.
An Ice Storm Warning remains in effect for the Greenville–Spartanburg area until early this afternoon. Treacherous travel continues this morning as freezing rain and earlier sleet leave roads coated in ice. Even untreated surfaces that look wet can be dangerously slick.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, ice accumulation on trees and power lines may lead to scattered outages. Falling limbs pose a risk to drivers and pedestrians, especially on secondary roads and rural routes. Travel is strongly discouraged unless absolutely necessary.
Temperatures sit near 32 degrees, preventing meaningful melting. As winds increase later today, additional stress builds on ice-laden trees. Drivers should expect sudden slick spots on bridges, overpasses, and shaded roadways. Give crews time to respond and plan delays if commuting.
Conditions gradually improve by late morning as precipitation exits and temperatures climb into the mid-30s. Even then, impacts linger. Melting ice refreezes after sunset, increasing the risk of flash freezing tonight and early Tuesday.
Behind the ice storm, Arctic air pours in. Tonight turns sharply colder, with lows near 10 degrees. Exposed pipes, pets, and outdoor workers face elevated risk. Tuesday stays dry and sunny but cold, with highs near 38 degrees.
Midweek brings quieter weather and gradual warming. Highs reach the low 40s by Wednesday and Thursday, though nights remain cold. Roads may improve, but watch for lingering ice in shaded areas.
Looking ahead, the 6–10 day outlook favors drier conditions with above-normal temperatures across the Southeast by early February.
