South Carolina – Cold air grips the Upstate early this morning, cracking across windshields and numbing hands within moments. Pavement feels stiff, and shaded roads hide slick surprises as winter tightens control.

The National Weather Service reports a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect for Spartanburg and much of the Upstate through midday. Temperatures started near 18 degrees, with wind chills dipping into the lower single digits. Conditions feel harsher in open areas and along elevated roadways.

A Special Weather Statement adds another concern: patchy black ice. Melting from yesterday refroze overnight, especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. Drivers along I-85, I-26, and local connectors should slow down this morning and allow extra stopping distance. Sidewalks and parking lots may also remain slick well after sunrise.

Sunshine helps later today, pushing highs into the lower 40s. Despite the warming, cold ground temperatures limit melting. Refreezing becomes a concern again after sunset as skies stay clear and winds relax. Tonight’s lows fall into the lower 20s, keeping pipes, pets, and plants vulnerable.

Cold weather lingers through midweek. Wednesday and Thursday remain dry, with highs in the low to mid-40s and frosty mornings. Meteorologists now track reinforcing cold air arriving late week, extending winter’s grip into the weekend.

By Friday night into Saturday, snow chances increase across the Upstate. Confidence remains moderate, but colder air nearby raises the risk for accumulating snow or slick travel if precipitation develops. Any daytime melting could quickly refreeze after dark, increasing collision risks.

Winter demands attention right now. Dress in layers, use caution on early drives, and prepare for rapidly changing conditions as the week unfolds. Are you seeing icy spots or heavier frost where you live this morning?
