South Carolina – Warm air settles in early this morning across the Upstate, softening the chill and setting the tone for a dramatic January swing. By afternoon, jackets feel optional, but the calm does not last long.
According to the National Weather Service serving Greenville-Spartanburg, dry and mild conditions hold through much of today, with highs climbing into the upper 60s near Spartanburg. Winds stay light, and travel conditions remain smooth for most of the day.
Changes begin late tonight as moisture increases. By Friday, clouds thicken and rain chances grow through the afternoon. Roads along I-85, Highway 29, and secondary routes turn damp, especially during the evening drive. While rainfall starts light, it becomes more widespread by Friday night.
Saturday brings the highest impact. Periods of steady rain move through the Upstate, pushing rain chances near 80 percent. Highs climb into the low 70s, unusually warm for winter, but wet pavement and reduced visibility could slow travel throughout the day. Plan extra time if running errands or heading out of town.
Rain lingers into Saturday night before gradually tapering. As cooler air filters in late, temperatures drop sharply. Wet roads may cool quickly by early Sunday, raising localized slick-spot concerns, especially on bridges and shaded areas.
Sunday offers improvement. Skies brighten, temperatures fall back into the 50s, and roads begin to dry. Clear skies Sunday night allow lows to dip near the upper 20s, reinforcing winter’s return after the brief warm stretch.
