South Carolina – Cold air settles low across the Midlands this morning, sharp enough to fog breath and harden the ground. The sky looks quiet now, but winter weather is lining up fast, with snow and dangerous travel increasingly likely by the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon for central South Carolina, including Columbia and surrounding counties. Heavy snow is possible, with accumulations between 2 and 5 inches. Travel could become very difficult as snow sticks quickly to roads and bridges.

Snow chances increase Friday night as colder air deepens. A rain and snow mix may briefly appear, but temperatures fall into the 20s, favoring snow. Flash freezing is a growing concern as any melting refreezes quickly, especially on untreated roads.

Saturday brings the highest impact. Snow is likely through much of the day, with reduced visibility at times. Roads across Richland, Lexington, and Calhoun counties could turn slick and snow-covered. Drivers should plan extra time or delay travel if possible. Gusty winds add to the bite, pushing wind chills into the single digits by Saturday night.

By Sunday morning, snow tapers off and skies begin to brighten. Cold lingers, keeping icy patches in place well into the day. Sunday night turns sharply colder, with lows near the mid-teens.

Looking ahead, early next week trends drier with sunshine returning. Temperatures slowly rebound into February, though cold mornings persist.
