Spartanburg, South Carolina – Sweltering heat and early-week thunderstorms could turn the Monday drive home into a slow crawl across Spartanburg.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop after 2 p.m. on Monday, July 21st, with the highest risk of activity arriving between 4 and 8 p.m. Afternoon temperatures will soar to 96°F, but it may feel as hot as 103°F due to oppressive humidity. Expect gusty winds, brief downpours, and possible lightning with any storms. Residents along I-85 and other major corridors should plan for slowdowns and wet pavement.

Light winds from the northwest will provide little relief. Rainfall totals should remain under a quarter inch, unless heavier pockets form in isolated thunderstorms. Monday night will stay warm and muggy, with lows near 73°F and a lingering chance of storms after midnight.

Tuesday brings a 60% chance of more widespread storms, especially after 5 p.m., keeping the heat index near 98°F. Showers remain possible Tuesday night before tapering off.
