Columbia, SC – Severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep through South Carolina’s Midlands and CSRA today, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and potential hazards. Residents in Columbia and surrounding areas should remain vigilant as storms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans through late morning.
According to the National Weather Service, the threat will begin in western areas such as McCormick and Lincoln counties by 7 a.m. and progress eastward through Columbia by 9 a.m., with storms expected to clear by noon. Gusts up to 30 mph and localized flooding are possible, prompting a Lake Wind Advisory in effect until 3 p.m. Boaters and small craft operators should exercise caution, as rough waters on area lakes could pose risks.
Temperatures will reach a high of 69 degrees today, with rain tapering off by the afternoon. Looking ahead, Monday and New Year’s Day are expected to bring mostly sunny skies, with highs near 67 degrees on Monday and 59 degrees on New Year’s Day. Overnight lows will drop into the mid-40s and low 30s later this week, so colder conditions are ahead.
For those celebrating outdoors, Tuesday’s slight chance of showers should clear by noon, leaving New Year’s Eve celebrations under clear skies.
Residents are advised to monitor local weather updates and stay indoors during peak storm hours today.
