Columbia, SC – Drivers across the Midlands and CSRA are being urged to use extra caution this morning as patchy, locally dense fog reduces visibility on roadways.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, a Special Weather Statement was issued early Sunday warning that fog could lead to sudden visibility changes during morning commutes. Motorists are advised to allow additional travel time and be prepared for rapidly changing driving conditions.

The weather service recommends keeping low-beam headlights on when approaching fog, slowing down, and maintaining extra distance between vehicles. Officials also caution drivers to take special care when crossing bridges and traveling through valleys, where fog can become denser and harder to predict.

While the fog is expected to gradually lift later in the morning, commuters heading out early may encounter dangerous driving conditions. Authorities stress that fog-related crashes often occur when drivers underestimate visibility changes.

Residents in Richland County, Lexington County, Aiken County, and surrounding areas are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and adjust travel plans if needed.
