Spartanburg, S.C. – Sunshine is quickly warming the Upstate, and the air already feels heavy before the hottest part of the day arrives. Heat will build through early afternoon before scattered thunderstorms begin bubbling up, bringing lightning, locally heavy rain and brief travel slowdowns across the Spartanburg area.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, temperatures will climb to around 94 degrees this afternoon with heat index values as high as 103 degrees. A 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after 3 p.m., marking the beginning of another active summer weather pattern across the Upstate.

Most of the day will remain dry, but conditions can change quickly during the late afternoon. Storms that develop may produce frequent lightning, brief torrential rain and gusty winds. While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated stronger storms are possible. The tornado threat remains low, but residents should stay weather aware if outdoor plans extend into the evening.

Travelers along Interstate 85, Interstate 26, U.S. Highway 221 and U.S. Highway 176 should prepare for rapidly changing road conditions later today. Heavy rain could briefly reduce visibility and create slick pavement. If lightning approaches, move indoors immediately and delay outdoor activities until storms pass.

The unsettled pattern continues into the first half of next week. Sunday again reaches 94 degrees, with a 40% chance of afternoon thunderstorms and heat index values near 102 degrees. Monday stays hot with a high near 91 degrees and only isolated storms before sunshine becomes more dominant Tuesday with highs around 92 degrees.

Across the Southeast, hot and humid conditions continue as a broad ridge keeps summer firmly in place. Long-range outlooks also favor above-normal temperatures beyond the five-day period, although daily afternoon thunderstorms remain a familiar part of the pattern.
