South Carolina – Brake lights blur into red smears this morning as dense fog settles across the Upstate and spills into the western Carolinas. The air feels damp, heavy, and disorienting before sunrise.
A Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through mid-morning for much of the Greenville–Spartanburg region and nearby North Carolina counties. Visibility has dropped to one quarter mile or less in spots, especially near low-lying areas and along I-85, I-77, and secondary roads feeding Charlotte.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville–Spartanburg, fog developed after midnight as calm winds and high humidity trapped moisture near the surface. Conditions are expected to remain hazardous through the early commute, with slow clearing after mid-morning.
Drivers heading to work or school should expect sudden visibility changes. Fog thickens quickly near overpasses, wooded stretches, and river valleys. Wet pavement adds another layer of risk. Slow down, leave extra distance, and use low-beam headlights and fog lights if available.
Conditions improve later today. Clouds gradually thin, allowing sunshine to return by late morning. Highs climb into the mid to upper 50s across the Upstate, while Charlotte reaches the mid-50s as well. Roads dry out, but shaded areas may stay slick longer.
Tonight turns mostly cloudy with lows in the mid-40s. Tuesday brings a noticeable warm-up. Sunshine pushes highs into the mid-60s, with gusty southwest winds developing by afternoon. Wednesday feels almost springlike, with temperatures near 70 degrees and lighter winds.
By late week, clouds increase again. Rain chances return Friday into the weekend, which could bring renewed travel slowdowns during morning hours.
Fog remains the main concern right now. Conditions should steadily improve after mid-morning.
