Columbia, South Carolina – Windy afternoon conditions are expected across South Carolina today as a Lake Wind Advisory remains in effect from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Boaters and small craft operators should use caution on area lakes as gusts may create hazardous conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, high pressure is keeping skies sunny and temperatures warm, with highs reaching the 80s. However, breezy winds will pick up by early afternoon, especially across open waters.
The advisory impacts multiple lakes across the Midlands and surrounding counties, including Lake Murray, Lake Marion, and Lake Wateree. Winds could gust over 20 mph, posing a threat to unanchored vessels and high-profile boats.
Residents planning to spend time outdoors should secure lightweight items and stay alert for shifting winds, especially near the water. Driving may also be affected on east-west roadways, including I-20 and U.S. 378.
Temperatures will dip into the 50s and low 60s overnight, with calmer conditions expected by Friday morning. Additional advisories could be issued if wind speeds remain elevated into the weekend.
