Columbia, SC – Residents across the Midlands are facing hot and humid weather today, with heat index values climbing into the upper 90s by afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, early morning fog and low clouds in southeastern portions of the state will clear by late morning, giving way to partly cloudy skies. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-90s, with the highest heat index values ranging from 96 to 100 degrees in some areas, including Augusta.
The NWS warns that these conditions can feel significantly hotter than the actual temperature, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses. Communities such as Columbia, Lexington, Orangeburg, and Sumter are expected to see heat index values between 94 and 98 degrees during peak hours from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Officials urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Even with partly cloudy skies, humidity will drive heat stress, particularly in urban areas with limited shade.
The weather service notes that relief will come in the evening as temperatures gradually drop into the 70s overnight.
