Charleston, South Carolina – Sweltering heat and the threat of severe storms will grip South Carolina on Saturday, as heat index values soar to between 100°F and 103°F across much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are likely by late afternoon and evening on June 7. A few storms may become strong to severe, with damaging wind gusts as the primary concern. The highest heat index values are forecast for interior portions of the Lowcountry and Pee Dee regions, with maximum heat building between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Cities like Columbia, Florence, and Summerville are expected to see peak heat indices over 100°F, making outdoor activity potentially dangerous. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activity during peak hours, and monitor alerts for severe weather. Storms could knock out power and create hazardous driving conditions on I-26, I-95, and other major routes during evening travel hours.

This is one of the hottest days of the year so far for South Carolina and comes amid increasing summer storm activity.

More advisories may be issued throughout the day. Heat and storm alerts remain in effect through Saturday evening.
