Greenville, S.C. – Damaging winds and isolated hail could impact evening commutes and outdoor plans across the Upstate as strong thunderstorms move into the region Friday night, with additional rounds possible through Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a marginal risk for severe weather (Level 1 of 5) has been issued for much of the Upstate and western North Carolina. Storm activity is expected to increase in coverage late Friday afternoon, with the strongest cells likely developing by sunset and persisting into early Saturday.
Cities including Greenville, Spartanburg, Rock Hill, and Gaffney may see storms capable of producing 40–60 mph wind gusts and small hail. In neighboring North Carolina, communities like Asheville, Hickory, and Charlotte are also within the risk zone. While widespread severe weather is not expected, localized power outages and downed limbs are possible where stronger storms track.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, monitor local alerts, and delay travel if storms develop in their area. With additional storms expected Saturday afternoon and evening, power crews and emergency services may face repeated disruptions across the region.
The marginal risk remains in place through Saturday evening. Stay weather-aware and check for updates from the NWS and local emergency management.
