Columbia, SC – Drivers in the Columbia and Orangeburg areas should prepare for dense fog and potential flooding on local roads this weekend. The National Weather Service issued a Dense Fog Advisory, in effect until 9 a.m. Friday, with visibility dropping to a quarter-mile or less. Areas around the North Fork of the Edisto River in Orangeburg are also experiencing significant flooding after the river crested at a record-breaking 15.34 feet overnight, affecting nearby roads and neighborhoods.
According to the National Weather Service, the fog could make driving hazardous, especially along major routes like Interstate 26. Motorists are advised to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra space between vehicles. Meanwhile, river levels in Orangeburg are expected to remain above flood stage throughout the weekend, posing an ongoing risk of localized flooding. Residents near the river should be prepared for potential evacuations and avoid low-lying areas.
Looking ahead, Saturday’s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with a high of 71°F, bringing brief relief from rain and fog. However, cloud cover will return by Sunday night, along with a 40% chance of showers. Temperatures will range from a low of 62°F on Sunday night to a high of 77°F on Veterans Day Monday, with rain chances increasing as the holiday approaches.
Those planning to attend Veterans Day events on Monday should prepare for possible showers. Local officials urge residents to stay updated on weather conditions, especially those in flood-prone areas near the Edisto River. For continued updates, monitor local forecasts and follow any additional alerts or advisories issued over the weekend.
