Columbia, S.C. – Triple-digit heat index values are set to return Tuesday across South Carolina, bringing dangerous conditions for Columbia residents and travelers along I-26.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Columbia will climb to 99°F on Tuesday, June 24, with a heat index as high as 106°F by late afternoon. Winds will remain light and variable, offering little relief. The risk of heat-related illness increases significantly during prolonged exposure, especially for outdoor workers and vulnerable populations.
Tuesday will begin mostly sunny, with cloud cover increasing later in the day. While no rainfall is expected until midweek, humidity levels will continue to climb, making outdoor activity hazardous. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control urges residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activity during peak hours, and check on elderly neighbors.
Wednesday brings the first chance of relief — but also instability. Scattered thunderstorms could develop after 2 p.m., with new rainfall amounts between a tenth and a quarter inch expected in Columbia. Storm chances continue overnight into Thursday, with another round possible after 2 p.m. Friday.
Travelers should be alert for slick roads and sudden downpours midweek, especially along I-20 and I-26 corridors.
Warnings for heat and storms remain in effect through Thursday. More advisories may follow.
