Columbia, SC – Residents across central South Carolina will wake up to the coolest morning of the season Friday, with temperatures expected to dip into the 40s across much of the Midlands, according to the National Weather Service in Columbia.

Forecasters say clear skies and calm winds will allow heat to escape overnight, leading to widespread lows in the mid- to upper-40s by early Friday morning. Columbia itself is forecast to hover around 50°F — the first time the city will experience temperatures below 50°F since April 18.

According to the weather service, locations such as Lancaster and Cheraw could see readings as low as 45°F to 47°F, while Aiken, Orangeburg, and Newberry are expected to remain near 50°F to 51°F. Thursday evening temperatures will begin cooling quickly after sunset, with most areas in the upper 50s by 9 p.m.

Meteorologists say the pattern marks a noticeable shift toward fall weather across the region, though no frost or freeze conditions are expected yet. The weekend forecast calls for continued cool mornings and comfortable afternoons under mostly sunny skies.
