Columbia, SC – Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to intensify across Columbia Friday afternoon, raising concerns for flash flooding and further swelling of the Congaree River. Travel during the evening commute may be impacted, with water covering low-lying roads in parts of Richland and Lexington counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, a Flood Warning remains in effect for the Congaree River at multiple points, with moderate flooding ongoing in areas such as Congaree National Park and the Carolina Eastman Facility. River levels could remain elevated into early next week, even as rainfall eases by Saturday.
Residents should be prepared for localized road closures, avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, and monitor updates from emergency management. Heavy rain could also cause delays for Friday night events and outdoor activities.
The storm threat will lessen by Saturday, with only isolated showers and more sunshine returning Sunday into early next week. Still, the NWS cautions that additional advisories could be issued if rainfall totals exceed expectations Friday.
