Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina drivers could face dangerous travel conditions Thursday as storms bring heavy rain, gusty winds, and lightning into the Midlands. Early fall warmth continues through Wednesday, but the weather shift by Thursday could impact commutes and outdoor plans. Residents are urged to prepare for reduced visibility and slick roads, especially along I-26 and U.S. 1 during the evening rush.

According to the National Weather Service, storms are likely to begin after 2 p.m. Thursday, with higher chances into the night. Gusts up to 15 mph and rainfall totals approaching a half inch could make conditions hazardous. Forecasters warn that stronger cells may develop, producing localized flooding in low-lying areas and neighborhoods with poor drainage.

Temperatures will remain unseasonably hot through midweek, with highs near 94 on Wednesday. By Thursday, highs will fall slightly into the upper 80s before cooler, unsettled weather settles in. Rain chances stay elevated through Saturday, offering Columbia its first true taste of fall.

Travelers should allow extra time Thursday evening, avoid flooded intersections, and keep cell phones charged in case of outages. Outdoor events Thursday afternoon and evening should have backup shelter plans in place.

The unsettled pattern could linger into the weekend before drier air arrives early next week. South Carolina residents should stay tuned for additional updates as storm chances remain high through Friday night.
