Columbia, SC – Warmer-than-normal temperatures across South Carolina will give way to widespread rain and a sharp cooldown midweek as a cold front moves through the region, according to the National Weather Service in Columbia.

The weather service reports that highs will reach the mid-80s Tuesday and Wednesday before temperatures plunge into the lower 70s by Thursday. The front is expected to bring isolated showers Tuesday, followed by more widespread showers and thunderstorms Wednesday through Wednesday night.

According to forecasters, the cold front will usher in breezy northeast winds and much drier air by Thursday, marking a noticeable shift from the recent unseasonably warm conditions. Temperatures will gradually recover into the mid-70s by Saturday, but the air will remain cooler and less humid.

Residents across the Midlands and Central Savannah River Area should prepare for potential travel delays and localized ponding on roads during Wednesday’s storms. The National Weather Service advises monitoring updates for any localized flood advisories or severe thunderstorm alerts as the front approaches.
