Charleston drivers face a tough Monday morning as rain, strong winds, and potential coastal flooding continue to slow commutes. Highway 17 could see the worst impacts as heavy showers reduce visibility and ponding creates dangerous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, widespread showers will persist today, with winds up to 25 mph near the coast. A High Surf Advisory remains in effect through early October, bringing rough surf and rip currents that make local beaches hazardous. The Rip Current Statement also extends into tonight, creating dangerous conditions for swimmers and boaters along Folly Beach and Isle of Palms.

Showers and thunderstorms remain likely through Tuesday, though conditions will improve by Wednesday as drier air ushers in a sunnier start to October. Temperatures will hold steady in the upper 70s during the day and low 70s at night, with breezy conditions easing midweek.

Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain and secure outdoor items as winds pick up. Drivers should allow extra time on I-26 and Highway 17, where standing water could linger through Tuesday morning. Beachgoers should stay out of the water until advisories are lifted.

By Wednesday, skies will clear with highs near 79, offering a calmer beginning to October. Sunshine dominates Thursday and Friday, setting up a pleasant fall weekend across the Lowcountry.
