Columbia, South Carolina – Near-freezing temperatures this morning are creating a cold start across central South Carolina, with another round of chilly conditions set to impact early Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, temperatures began the day at or below freezing in parts of the Midlands, with afternoon highs only reaching into the 50s. While sunshine helps moderate conditions slightly, readings remain below normal for mid-March.
Communities including Columbia, Sumter, and Orangeburg will see dry conditions through the day, but the bigger concern arrives tonight. Lows are expected to fall into the 32°F to 35°F range by early Thursday morning, creating a risk for frost and potential damage to sensitive plants.
Drivers should also watch for isolated black ice in rural or low-lying areas during the early morning hours, especially on bridges and untreated roads.
A significant warm-up begins Thursday and accelerates into the weekend. Highs climb into the mid-60s Thursday, then surge into the 70s Friday. By Saturday and Sunday, temperatures are expected to reach the low to mid-80s across the Midlands.
Residents should protect plants tonight and prepare for a rapid shift from chilly mornings to summer-like warmth by the weekend. Additional advisories may be issued if frost concerns continue.
